As a city, Belfast recognises the huge importance in becoming as sustainable as possible.

Many initiatives are already in place around Belfast incorporating everything from the way we source our food to how we tackle climate change.  In fact, Belfast City Council has appointed a Commissioner for Resilience who is developing a vision and goals for Belfast for the next 20 years, under The Belfast Agenda. At its heart, this strategy aims to deliver the city’s goal of inclusive economic growth, transitioning Belfast to an inclusive, low-carbon, climate-resilient economy in a generation.

Belfast is taking committed actions to become a sustainable destination. Together with Belfast City Council and partners, Visit Belfast is signing up to The Global Destination Sustainability Index (GDS-Index) which is the leading sustainability benchmarking and improvement programme for destinations around the world.  The mission of the programme is to engage, inspire and enable destinations to become more sustainable places to visit, meet and thrive in.

The Index is based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals created by The UN and are listed below:

Priorities for Visit Belfast:

  1. Climate Action: Supporting the shift to a low-carbon climate resilient economy, through greener events
  2. Resource Management: Helping conference organisers reduce waste through responsible consumption and production
  3. Public Procurement: Promoting public procurement processes that are socially and environmentally responsible
  4. Sustainable Food: Supporting local venues to ensure healthy and sustainable food a defining characteristic of Northern Ireland
